Do I Need Education To Be A Writer?

Inspiration comes in many ways, and as emotional beings some of us tend to express ourselves through writing. In my case, I first started to write poetry during my teenage angst and of course reading it now will make anyone cringe.

Later on, my interests shifted towards short fantasy/Sci-fi stories and songwriting. Several black notebooks later I noticed changes in my writing flow, I found it easier to express myself and the more positive feedback I received the more my confidence grew.

Talent is a blessing, but having talent isn’t enough. Adding some self education into the mix is how your work will shine. I always had a talent for songwriting but honestly my lyrics weren’t great at the beginning but that didn’t stop me, so I studied other artists songs and read books based on songwriting techniques. Eventually I started making better hooks and fellow artists were contacting me to write their songs.

The idea to create something that’s within you and it manifests through writing to inspire or entertain others is amazing. Such power comes through knowledge and experience in the craft.

Writing a novel or a successful blog doesn’t require a degree in english or literature but it is important to have a working knowledge in composition, and on different writing styles, so naturally some research is implied.

Now, there are writing careers that have certain requirements. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics a bachelor’s degree is typically needed to work as a full-time writer. Since writing requires a specific set of skills, some employers prefer to hire candidates that have a degree in English, communications, or journalism.

If you’re thinking of becoming a writer or have started to work on your craft it is important to understand that this is an ongoing learning experience that takes time to master, but that journey is well worth it.

When your creation takes life of its own as it inspires people to see and feel it through your writing, that right there is a win. So to achieve what every writer aspires remember that educating yourself is the stepping stone towards your success.

  1. I used to think you needed education for anything, and I went back to college at 28 years old to learn Business/Accounting (the only thing I could afford and get into), because I thought I’d get a better job with it. Then I stumbled across writing and have found my footing there.

While education for writing can be useful, it definitely isn’t a requirement. Thanks for sharing this!

  2. I consider Education to be a tool in which allows us a way to acquire general knowledge and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually. As a result, it develops a way into knowing and experiencing a method for what’s to come.

  3. Interesting post.
Personally I think you need some sort of education, it doesn’t have to be in college but education about what you are going to wrote about, so you don’t misinform the masses which happen often.
